ImageInLife - Training European Experts in Multilevel Bioimaging, Analysis and Modelling of Vertebrate Development and Disease
ImageInLife is a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Innovative Training Network (ITN) funded by the European Commission Horizon2020 programme (grant agreement: 721537) that addresses the challenge of understanding how cells behave to build organisms as complex as vertebrates. The project will run for 4 years from January 2017. It brings together leading European research groups in the field and partners from companies that aim to commercialise corresponding tools.
The main objectives are:
- To use the vertebrate embryo as a model to develop new tools to image vertebrate organisms.
- To train future bio-imagers through research and to expose them to the richest environment to foster a successful career.
ImageInLife will recruit 15 Early stage researchers (ESR) to train them in modern imaging technologies for the analysis and modelling of vertebrate development and disease. They will all conduct original research projects dedicated to imaging vertebrates at cellular or subcellular levels. Network-wide workshops and transfers between research teams within the network will provide excellent training opportunities and enhance their career prospects.
Within ImageInLife, DITABIS will develop a smart imaging platform for automated high-resolution imaging of zebrafish tissues and organs. We will use the well-established ACQUIFER high-content screening platform to develop a flexible tool-box for various zebrafish smart imaging and screening applications. We will use various methods including sample handling techniques, 3D printing, robotic microscopy and image processing techniques to design, implement and test novel protocols and workflows for automated high-resolution screening of zebrafish. These developments will be guided by scientific requirements of collaboration partners and ImageInLife consortium members and proof-of-concept studies will be conducted. Results will be integrated in the ACQUIFER Imaging Machine screening platform. This interdisciplinary project will lead to the establishment of readily accessible tools and an easy-to-use framework enabling complex zebrafish screening assays.
